If there's one thing about trailer food that I enjoy it is its simplicity. Some trailers specialize in burgers, others in cupcakes, and so on. Conscious Cravings is an all vegetarian food trailer with multiple locations. Their specialty? Wraps and salads!
Conscious Cravings was one of the first food trucks I began dining at regularly. When I think of wraps I am often, quite simply, not interested. With one look at the menu at Conscious Cravings, however, you'll see that the wraps they create are not the traditional, cold, lettuce filled chewy tortillas you'd find as the "vegetarian" option at a lot of conventional restaurants. These wraps are served warm with delicious sauces and even meat alternatives. I am drooling just thinking about them.
My favorites are the BBQ Seitan and Chimichurri Seitan wraps. Their wheat based meat alternative (seitan) has a softer texture than most conventional varieties available in stores. It's almost like pulled pork. It's perfect for wraps and it really takes on the flavor of the sauce without completely disappearing itself. For those of you with an aversion to seitan, Conscious Cravings also has black bean, tofu, and mushroom filled wraps as well. You're bound to find something you'll like.
I am particularly fond of both of the wraps I mentioned, though. The BBQ sauce is really, really tasty. It's sweet and just a bit spicy. The chimichurri is just as fabulous, sweet, tangy, yummy. I find it difficult choosing between the two quite often! You can order your wraps with vegan cheese as well. The vegan Daiya mozzarella tastes very good with the chimichurri wrap and gives it another dimension. Chris and I always order the baked rosemary fries, too, whenever we go. They come out hot, crispy, and full of flavor without being loaded with grease and other unhealthy things. Adding them to your order is not a necessary upgrade, but it will certainly make your dining experience more enjoyable.
Unlike most food trucks, you can find side dishes and a variety of beverages there, too. You can order a healthful smoothie, housemade iced tea and flavored lemonade, rosemary French fries, and chips to go with or after your meal.
As this is a vegetarian food truck, be sure to confirm that the items you're ordering are vegan! Unless you're just vegetarian, in which case Conscious Cravings is 100% safe for you!
Depending on the time of year, Conscious Cravings has 2-3 locations throughout Austin. Hours vary by location as well. For a complete menu, maps, directions, and hours, please visit www.consciouscravingsaustin.com.
